Cultured Pearl quality — determining the quality of the surface

When going shopping for a freshwater pearl necklace naturally you would be looking for the best quality available. Typically you may have to shop at several jewelry stores to determine the best price and quality. One of the factors to determine the grade of your pearl necklace would be the surface quality of the Perl.

Besides the color, luster, size and shades you would need to carefully consider the surface quality of the Perl before buying. You will have to judge with your own eyes what blemishes exist on pearls you are looking at. Now but when dealing with pearls because they are cultured and grown in nature it would be expected that you would find in various shapes and sizes. This also applies to blemishes, you will find all kinds of blemishes and these are not necessarily flaws. However typically when buying pearls we look for the best blemish free round pearls we can find.

What kind of the blemishes can you expect to see. Bumps, basically raised areas that may cover some of the surface of the Perl. Chips, this is very common with pearls that have very thin nacre. pits and pinpoints, basically these are tiny holes on the surface which are hard to notice, the less noticeable but better. Cracks, this type of flaw is not acceptable because it often indicates that the Perl surface may crack. Cracks may not even be noticeable actually they may look like a fine piece of hair trapped on the surface of the Perl but eventually may flake off. Scratches, if the scratch is visible it will affect the beauty of the Perl otherwise expect very tiny scratches in medium to lower great pearls.

Most pearls will have blemishes, but it’s a quantity and prominence of the flaws that determine its visual beauty and price. Basically most pearls will have blemishes because they are cultured and come from nature, but the best pearls will have the least amount of blemishes visible. Stay away from pearls that have cracks. Cracks are indications that the nacre is too thin and the Perl will not last very long. Also make sure that the pearl necklace has pearls that are uniform in color. Pearls of that vary widely in a pearl necklace will not look good unless they have been specifically designed to look that way.

So when buying from a jewelry store you must decide what type of quality pearls you want. Pearls with the least amount of blemishes and that have a uniform color with a high luster and round shape will typically cost the highest price. And then from there prices go down depending on how slightly off round the pearls are, the quality of the nacre, level of luster, the size of the Perl and the amount of blemishes the pearls have. Most consumers are not experienced enough to evaluate the quality of pearls. Typically you would go to a very reputable Perl jeweler and would place your trust on their reputation. Otherwise if you are experienced in evaluating pearls then you would have more leeway and shopping around and getting a better price.
